Get Ready for Women

The Association unites with fellow health care leaders to promote women’s heart health across the Americas

June 2024

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women worldwide, and it is imperative that we act. Now.

Much of what we know about heart disease is based on research conducted by mostly male doctors treating mostly male patients, leading to significant underservice and unequal outcomes in the treatment of women.

At SIAC’s 31st Interamerican Congress of Cardiology conference, the Association and SIAC hosted a joint session on addressing persistent disparities in the cardiovascular treatment of women. Dr. Nanette K. Wenger emphasized the importance of female cardiologists joining their male colleagues as equals, celebrating the growing role of women in both clinical trials and publication leadership. Additionally, Drs. Ana Munera, Claudia Al Monte and Johanna Contreras presented on Corazón de Mamá, the joint advocacy campaign between the Association, SIAC Mujer and the InterAmerican Heart Foundation dedicated to advancing cardiovascular health among Latin American mothers and promoted via Go Red for Women® and The Doulas Project.

As part of the updated campaign, one of the Corazón de Mamá panelists, Dr. Johanna Contreras, hosts webinars on the popular Spanish-speaking health platform “Hola Doctor”.
